And they're ready for the start! The 2018 Maine harness racing season is set to open at the end of March at the historic Scarborough Downs racetrack.

Maine’s own harness race horses will be on full display at Scarborough Downs on Saturday, March 31st beginning at 1:30 p.m. when the 2018 Maine State Harness Horse Racing Season officially opens.

According to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, some Maine horses and teams started their season on out-of-state tracks, such as Pompano Park in Florida, Saratoga and Yonkers in New York, and Meadowlands in New Jersey. But, the vast majority of Maine harness race horses, horsemen and horsewomen, as well as fans who have all been cooped-up all winter, are looking forward to March 31st to start an exciting new season.

The 2018 racing season will feature full radio coverage of racing at eight of Maine’s agricultural fairs, including Skowhegan, which will be celebrating its 200th fair. Many other special events, invitational races and special racing series are being planned.

Scarborough Downs itself has also been in the news recently, with a sale pending to a new developer.
