The Guru

On February 23, 1967, across the Great Pond at Abbey Road Studios, The Beatles were recording "Lovely Rita" for Sgt. Pepper... Meanwhile, at The Augusta General Hospital, Brian James let out his first cry to world. 20 years later in the summer of '87, Brian played "Lovely Rita" on the radio station he grew up with, WBLM. Taking over the Night Flight for the Captain, who moved to host The WBLM Morning Show, a teenage dream was realized. Brian "The Guru" James is a dyed-in-wool Mainah. In the 80's at Cony High School, He had a different colored Blimp t-shirt for each day of the week. A WBLM Loyal listener who ended up making the team. Pretty frickin' sweet bub! The Guru has been rockin' Blimpville for over 25 years and has hosted The Afternoon Express for nearly a decade. When he not rockin' live with BLM, he's rockin' at home in Westbrook with his wife Sherry, and sons, Sam and Carter. Rip it hahd weekday afternoons at work and on the way home!! Like him on Facebook! Oh yeah…he does weddings and parties with Dom too, visit http://www.maineplatinumdj.com/rockstar.php for more on that. And remember, if the conniption fits, wear it!

Tonight’s WBLM Mini-Concert [VIDEO]

I’m back at Gritty’s in Auburn today for another 'Last Friday' live broadcast of the WBLM Afternoon Express! We love coming back to our roots and sharing memories with area Blimpsters who have been with us since the beginning. Of course the biggest ‘remember when’ stories are all the great concerts that came to Lewiston/Auburn back in the day.

Listen: Oak Drummer Remembers Rick Pinette

I first met Dan Caron in the mid 80s when he was working at Carroll's Music Center in Lewiston. I believe he was a sales associate at the time, but there was nothing sale-sy about him at all. He graciously put up with me fiddling with all the latest synths in the keyboard department. Dan is one the nicest guys I've ever met and I am honored to call him my friend 30 plus years later.

Happy 67th Birthday to the eternally cool Ric Ocasek of the Cars! He was born in Baltimore and later moved with his family to Ohio where he met Benjamin Orr. They formed a short lived folk band called Milkwood in the early 70’s. After that ended, Ric and Ben continued making music together eventually forming a new wave band in Boston called Cap’n Swing. They later changed the name to the Cars.
