As we enter the new year we try to put our houses in order. Literally and figuratively. Closets and basements are being cleaned out, and now is a good time to also lose the now annoying catch phrases from 2014. I think this is brilliant! Every year Lake Superior State University releases a "List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness". Some are long overdue for retirement, and some I've never heard of. Because I'm apparently old. Let's take a look before they make a come back:

  • Polar Vortex-O.K., I'm familiar with this one. What happened to calling cold weather "winter"? Buh Bye!
  • Hack- Hacks are tips, but the term was so overused it got ridiculous! Hacks for everything! Walking out doors! Walking indoors! Walking in a mall! Walking up stairs! Walking down stairs!...Sheesh!
  • Takeaway- In some parts of the country this means "take out", but during 2014 it meant "lesson learned". Only more obnoxious was "wheel house". Ugh.
  • Bae-Huh? Never heard this one. I thought it was Beyonce's nickname...Looked it up though. It's an affectionate term that means "before anything else". it's a stupid little word that I can't imagine using ever, so bye bye.
  • Swag- One of my 8 year old's favorite words. That tells grown ups that it should not be part of our language set.
  • "..."-Nation- This had me scratching my head because I thought "Red Sox Nation" was the only nation. I don't get out to sporting events much so imagine my surprise when I found out that everyone else's fans are copying us! It's true! There's a Packer's-Nation, Badger-Nation, Brewer-Nation (who are THEY?), the list goes on and on. Cut it out!
I found this video that included my top peeves. it's like, awesome.
In your opinion, what was the most over used word of the past year? Leave a comment or tweet #banishedwords2014

What words shall we abuse during 2015?
