There's been much talk in recent months about which Maine city is the most dangerous. Is it Lewiston, with its rough-and-tumble reputation? Portland, the state's biggest city? Bangor, with its high rate of break-ins? Lo and behold, a new list was released this week.

RoadSnacks.com ranks cities on any number of measures including "drunkest," "snobbiest " and just plain "worst." In its look at the most dangerous city, the site gave that distinction to Augusta, the state's capital, based on FBI crime data.

Specifically, the study looked at three years of FBI data on violent and property crime. Violent crime comprises four offenses: murder and manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property crime includes burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.

Here are the 10 most dangerous cities, according to RoadSnacks.

1. Augusta
2. Biddeford
3. Skowhegan
4. Waterville
5. Bangor
6. Sanford
7. Portland
8. Auburn
9. Lewiston
10. South Portland

According to the findings, Augusta had the highest rate of property crime and the second-highest rate of violent crime. Biddeford was the most violent city and had the fourth-highest rate of property crime.

Bangor had the third highest rate of property crime, but was just the ninth-most violent.

The list is pretty similar to one released by Movoto in February. That list, based on 2013 data, also found Augusta to be the most dangerous city. However, in Movoto's list, Bangor was the third "most dangerous," mainly because of the high rate of property crimes in the city.
