According to WGME-13, the Maine Department of Transportation will be lowering the speed limit on I-295 from Falmouth to Topsham from the current 70 mph to 65 mph on March 27.

Several factors have contributed to the decision to lower the speed limit back down to the original 65MPH posting, including a higher frequency of crashes. New data shows that I-295 crashes increased by 29% in a two-year span.

The Maine DOT said that the speed limit will be downgraded from 70 mph to 65 mph, and that change will occur on March 27, weather permitting.

Variable message boards will alert motorists two weeks in advance of the change.
