AAArrrggghh! Our neighborhood has been overrun by dandelions. No sooner do I mow the lawn, and up springs another army of fluffy weeds. It's time to get my hands dirty and wrestle back my yard from these unruly party crashers! The first thing that I'm going to do is buy one of these weed tools...

Just pulling the flower from the ground does not kill the plant. You heard the man, the entire root has to come out. If you don't have a 10 year old to pull weeds for allowance money at your house, I found some options:

  • Mow high. That means, put your blade at it's tallest setting. Dandelions and other weeds need the sun's heat to grow, taller grass puts them in the shade.
  • Mow often. Lop off those heads before they have a chance to mature. Wow that sounds harsh...
  • Weeds don't like healthy soil, so fertilize early in spring and late in the fall.
  • Reseed in the fall when weeds are dying out. Not only will the grass have a few months to establish it's roots before summer, but they won't have to compete with weeds for nutrients, water or space.
  • The acid in household vinegar acts as an herbicide and it doesn't pollute soil or water. Stubborn weeds may take more than one dose, the vinegar is even more effective if you heat it up!

I can't keep a house plant alive, and I can't kill weeds. Go figure.
