Darling, Bishop Meet For Stanley Cup [VIDEO]

When the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-3 Saturday night it not only made a match-up of Chicago and Tampa Bay for the Stanley Cup, but also two former UMaine Black Bear goalies.Ben Bishop earned a spot in the cup finals by shutting out the Rangers on Friday and will now meet another former UMaine goalie in Scott Darling who is the back-up for Chicago.

While Corey Crawford is the starting goalie for Chicago, the Blackhawks might never be in this position if not for Darling leading Chicago in their first series. When Crawford struggled in game one against Nashville it was Darling who entered the game and led them to an overtime win. Darling would end up getting three of the four wins including a spectacular 49 save performance in a game three triple overtime win.

Bishop guarded the Black Bear goal from 2005 to 2008 where he racked 55 wins. When he departed for the pros it was Darling who arrived on the UMaine campus to take over his duties.

Darling played two seasons the Black Bears before leaving school because of off-ice problems. It has now been well chronicled that those problems included alcoholism which plagued him during the start of his pro career until he received treatment and turned his life around.

The Stanley Cup finals best-of-seven series gets underway Wednesday in Tampa Bay.
