Homelessness is a huge problem across the country. It’s no different here in Maine. There are over 3,000 homeless people in Maine and over 600,000 nationally.

How many times have any of us driven up and down Congress Street or Franklin Street here in Portland and see homeless people holding signs asking for help? If you're like me, you probably don't know what to say to a homeless person. But according to one online publication, there are some guidelines recommended by experts in this field.

WHAT TO SAY TO A HOMELESS PERSON:

• I don’t have any money, but is there another way I can help?
• Did you catch the game? This sounds like a joke, but sports are often played in shelters and it could actually be an easy conversation.
• Good morning. Yes, even homeless people appreciate a small kind hello.
• How are you doing? Would you like to talk? You may not get a yes, but that person will know that someone cares.
• I will keep you in my thoughts.

WHAT NOT TO SAY TO A HOMELESS PERSON:

• Why don’t you get help?
• Here’s a dollar. Please don’t use it to buy alcohol.
• Why don’t you go to a shelter?
• You don’t seem like you should be homeless.
• Get a job. This is by far the thing homeless people hear the most.
