This time of the year, there is generally love in the air. Unless apparently, you're breathing in that crisp (and cold) Maine air where new statistics show that love can turn very quickly into something else. Check out these sad but all true facts about marriages (and divorces) in Maine.

1. THIS PROBABLY ISN'T YOUR FIRST TIME

That technically is a misleading headline but not completely untrue. Slate detailed how Maine was the top state in the Northeast for people who were working on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th or more marriages. The truth is, that a little more than a quarter of the married people in Maine have ex-wives or ex-husbands, which is pretty wild to think about. Let's just  blame that statistic on how "old" Maine is, with an average age of 44 years old per resident. Yeah, that's got to be it.

2. DIVORCE HAPPENS A LOT IN MAINE

This isn't a misleading headline, its the harsh truth. Maine ranked behind only one other state in percentage of divorced residents according to data procured from the U.S. Census Bureau by the Washington Post. The state that Maine trails? Nevada, a place where you can legally get married (and divorced) on every street corner in Las Vegas. Lets argue that Maine has a bunch of "shotgun" weddings and that's a major cause for the spike in this statistic.

3. MAINE IS THE 4TH BEST STATE IN THE COUNTRY TO GET DIVORCED

See, it's not all doom and gloom. According to the personal finance site GoBanking.com, Maine ranks quite favorably on your wallet when it comes to divorce proceedings. Somewhere, someone is reading that and screaming "SCREW THAT!!". It's true, and here's why. Divorce filing in Maine is cheap, costing $120. That's better than 41 other states in the country. Additionally, the average fee for a divorce attorney rolls in at about $207 per hour which, believe it or not, puts Maine in the top 5 for cheapest attorneys in the country. Lastly, Maine generally processes divorce paperwork within a 60-day timeframe, which makes it one of the quickest in the country. Add that up, and Maine is a great place....to get divorced.
