Female lawyers' bras are setting off the metal detectors at the Cumberland County Jail, and the women are outraged at the suggested solution - to remove their bras in the bathroom and then pass through the detectors again. The words "sexist", "ludicrous", "discriminatory" and "apoplectic" have been used in response. A lawsuit has been mentioned. Over underwear. There is a sign on the door stating that they will go through a metal detector. Female lawyers remove their rings, hairclips and the change from their pockets, but when it comes to their underwires, they draw the line. They do make underwire bras with plastic that will silently pass through the machines. Write it off as a work expense if you have to, but seriously, do you really think that jail employees just want to get you out of your bra for kicks? How is being asked to adjust your clothing for your job any different than someone who is required to wear a hard hat or steel toed shoes at their job? It's about safety. When entering a jail, the detector can't tell the difference from a metal underwire and a gun. The bottom line is, if you are wearing metal that is setting off the machine you should remove it. Female lawyers may SAY that their underwire is setting off the alarm. Do we just take their word for it? If you are going to pass through a metal detector, don't wear metal! DUH!
