So it seems as though John Paul Jones beat Paul McCartney to the punch when landing the bass player role for super-group Them Crooked Vultures.

Sir Paul tells the Daily Mail that after playing together at the Grammys in 2009:

"We went out for a bite to eat afterwards and Dave [Grohl] told me he was starting this band with Josh [Homme], I asked him who was playing bass and he rather sheepishly told me he'd approached John."

Dave Grohl asked the Led Zeppelin bass player to be in his new band, it worked, and then he had to tell Paul McCartney to his face that they'd found someone else.  That had to be awkward, but Grohl doesn't get any sympathy from me; he's basically living out every teenage rock-and-rollers dream. Sorry McCartney, I already asked John Paul Jones...
