First place in the American League East was on the line this weekend as the Red Sox met the Yankees. In the end the Yanks complete a sweep of Boston with an 8-5 win in the series finale. The issue of starting pitching and it inability to go deep into games reared its ugly head again. Joe Kelly could not make it out of the 5th inning after allowing 5 runs on 9 hits. It did not take the Yankees long to jump on Kelly as Mark Teixeira smashed a 2-run homer in the top of the first inning.

Brett Gardner added a 3-run shot later in the game off Craig Breslow while Brian McCann drove in 2 runs to help the Yankees maintain their spot at the top of the standings while the Red Sox drop to 4th place, 4 games behind New York.

Boston will now wrap up its 9 game home stand with a series against the Tampa Bay Rays tonight, Clay Buchholz gets the start on the mound.
