Koko the gorilla was born in 1971 at the San Francisco Zoo and has been working with Dr. Penny Patterson since she was six months old. She is famous for using sign language. Koko uses over 1,000 signs and can understand about 2,000 words spoken in English. She has always loved babies but hasn't found the right guy, so in 1984 she was given her first kitten to love. An award winning children's book called, "Koko's Kitten" was written about their relationship. For Koko's 44th birthday her best friend and trainer, Dr. Penny, presented her with a box full of kittens! Koko chose a gray one that she named Ms. Gray, but another kitty wanted to adopt Koko, so she was named Ms. Black by her new gorilla mommy.

Koko and Dr. Patterson work with the The Gorilla Foundation and together they have produced educational videos and books about interspecies communication.
