This is my husband Mark standing by the Lock Wall on Commercial St. in Portland. We were walking to the Maine State Pier to see the Pat Benatar show when I asked him for this picture. It's romantic to me that our lock wall in Portland is part of an international love fest involving public fences and locks. I found a great story from March, 2003 that the Portland Press Herald did when this all started. Read it here. It began with 3 women and a lot of beer at Gritty's, so the idea was guaranteed to be a good one! Paris had the most famous love lock wall, but the city council have recently removed the metal grills beside the bridge Pont des Arts along with the several hundreds of thousands of love locks attached to them! Mon Dieu! The historic bridge overlooks the Eiffel Tower and locals regard the tribute to eternal love as an eyesore. It apparently also became dangerous and started to collapse under the weight of the locks. The grills have been replaced with temporary panels that have ugly,(in my humble opinion), grafitti on them. In the fall they will be replaced with padlock-proof plexiglass panels. I admit that I am tempted to present my guy with a lock and a lobster dinner next door at Portland Lobster Company because I'm a romantic, and now I know that I have no shot of getting it done in Paris. Commercial Street will do just fine.

How do feel about the Love Lock Wall? Two thumbs up for love, or an eyesore? Comment on our Fan Page, or tweet #mainelovelocks

Zut alors!
