New Hampshire Really Enforcing Snow Removal From Car Roofs

A State Trooper in New Hampshire pulled over 21 drivers in four hours because they had too much snow on their car roofs, according to News Center Maine.

The law, which requires drivers to remove snow not only from their windshields but also from the top of their car, is called Jessica's Law. The law was passed in New Hampshire after Jessica Smith was killed when ice from a tractor-trailer hit a box truck that ended up hitting her car. It has been enforced since 2002 in New Hampshire and Maine has had talks of enforcing it as well.

Drivers who violate the law face fines of $250 to $500 for a first offense and $500 to $1,000 for subsequent offenses, according to WMUR.

Of the 21 drivers pulled over within four hours by the State Trooper at the start of this article, 19 were fined for not removing snow. Two of the drivers were arrested. All of the drivers pulled over were required to clear their vehicles of snow and ice before continuing on.
