The Portland ECHL team, that will begin play next year, has chosen their official mascot when they finally hit the ice next season.

five team names back in mid-August between the Watchmen, Wild Blueberries, Puffins, Mariners, and Lumberjacks.  The consensus that was announced in Portland on Friday afternoon was that Mariners would be the nickname moving forward.

The Maine Mariners nickname was used for the AHL team in Portland from 1977-1992 before the team relocated and became the Providence Bruins.

The 2018-19 season will mark the return of hockey to the city of Portland after the Portland Pirates left the city following the 2016-17 season to relocate to Springfield, Massachusetts.  The team still has not announced color schemes or logo yet, but will announce that at a later date according to the team’s twitter.  They also have not aligned with an NHL franchise at this time.
