City leaders in Portland want to raise the age to purchase cigarettes and other tobacco products from 18 to 21. The topic will be discussed at the Health and Human Services meeting tonight. About 100 other towns have raised the age to buy smokes, including Manhattan, Chicago and Boston. Supporters believe that the age increase will cut down the access that kids have to tobacco, but some people believe that if a person is old enough to vote, pay taxes and fight for their country, they should be allowed to make their own choices.
