According to the Bangor Daily News, veteran teacher Catherine Gordon was caught off guard when she was told to remove her Hello Kitty tree from her classroom last Friday. She's been a teacher at Bangor High School for nearly 30 years and for most of those years she's been decorating her classroom for the holidays. Friday was the first time that she has been told to remove those decorations. Here's the full story with pictures of the Hello Kitty tree and ornaments courtesy of the Bangor Daily News.

Gordon vented her frustrations via Facebook:

Gordon's complaints didn't go unnoticed. National publications like the Huffington Post have picked up her story and the lights are beginning to shine brighter on the Bangor Superintendent of School Betsy Webb's decision. Webb's statement to the media said in part;

“In alignment with national and state standards, the Bangor School Department educates students about culture, traditions and holidays through curriculum ties in English language arts, music, art, social studies and world languages."

So what do you think? Should the teacher have been told to remove the tree? Is political correctness spiraling out of control?
