While Star Wars: The Force Awakens was an international smash hit, it wasn’t devoid of criticism. Some people felt that the film veered a little close to the storyline of the original Star Wars film; others felt that the family friendly action didn’t quite line up with the darker tone they expected from movies like The Empire Strikes Back and Revenge of the Sith. So to those fans, I offer you the above deleted scene (via i09) where Chewbacca rips out the arm of Unkar Plutt. It may be another throwback to the original movies, but at least it’s one with a little bit of bite.

As you’ll remember, Unkar Plutt  —  voiced by none other than Mr. Simon Pegg himself —  was one of the petty tyrants of Jakku, the Tatooine-esque planet that Rey called home for many years of her life. After Rey refused to sell BB-8 to Plutt, she decided to cut ties with the merchant permanently, stealing the discarded Millennium Falcon and setting off on her own hero’s journey across the stars. Most fans assumed that Plutt was lost among the victims of the Imperial bombing, but in this scene, we see that Plutt had managed to escape to Maz Kanata’s castle only to find himself on the wrong side of an argument with Chewbacca.

Like so much else in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this scene with Chewbacca and Plutt acts as an important callback to the original movie. Not only do we finally get to see Chewbacca deliver on that infamous Wookiee temper, we are also treated to another bar scene where a patron’s arm ends up on the floor after a brief encounter with our young hero. Somewhere, in some dark corner of the universe, Unkar Plutt and Ponda Baba are nursing drinks with their cybernetic limbs and wondering why they had the bad luck of going up against a future Jedi.

As the i09 article notes, this scene had been previously teased alongside the release of the 3D Collector’s Edition of Star Wars: The Force Awakens but is only now being seen by fans for the first time. Maybe not quite in line with the kid-friendly movie that J.J. Abrams and company had in mind, but this will scene will now always belong to the secret Star Wars canon that exists only in my heart.
