An article in USA Today that quotes Car Insurance Comparison's (CIC) data that ranks the best drivers among the fifty U.S. states and the District of Columbia. 

They based their rankings by using these criteria.

  • Fatalities Rate per 100 Million Vehicle Miles Traveled
  • Failure to Obey Traffic Signals & Seat Belt Laws
  • Drunk Driving Rates
  • Number of Tickets
  • Careless Driving

Maine ended up with the sixth best drivers in the country.
Maine ranked 19th in fatalities, 26th in failure to obey traffic signals & seat belt laws
Drunk Driving Maine ranked 29th
Tickets Maine ranked 4th
Careless Driving Maine came in 6th

New England drivers did very well in their rankings.
With Vermont at number one, New Hampshire at number three, Maine at number six, Connecticut at number seven, Massachusetts at number ten, and Rhode Island at number twelve.

The Top five states for the worst drivers are:
1. Louisiana
2. South Carolina
3. Mississippi
4. Texas
5. Alabama

The Top five states for the best drivers are:
1. Vermont
2. Utah
3. New Hampshire
4. Minnesota
5. Oregon
