Maine recently released its annual report on crime in the state for 2016 which had good news. According the Sun Journal, crime in Maine dropped 9 percent in 2016 from 2015. Over the past five years, crime is down 39 percent statewide. However some towns in Maine aren't seeing the same drops as others.

The crime rate for a town in Maine is calculated by dividing the number of reported crimes by the total population and then multiplying the result by 1000. That gives you the number of crimes per 1000 people. So while some towns may have more crimes, they may also have a larger population, resulting in their rate of crimes per 1000 people being lower.
