If you've ever taken a trip up to the Sunday River area during the summer, you've probably driven by the Big Adventure Center in Bethel. Sitting just off the main drag, the waterslides are mini-golf course are visible from the street. But for the past couple summers, there's been one thing missing. PEOPLE. The amusement park has been laying dormant and abandoned for the last two summers.

For many years, Big Adventure served as the boredom killer for the area. During the winter, there was a large indoor area featuring laser tag, rock climbing and an arcade. In the summer, a sprawling min-golf course and waterslides added to the fun. And then one day, it was all gone. Closed for good, website and Facebook page taken down.

Perhaps the business closing wasn't as much of a surprise as the fact that nobody has purchased it and pumped it up again. Bethel sees an incredible flow of traffic for almost all four seasons, with Sunday River, multiple wedding destinations and leaf peeping occupying the area. Instead, passersby can stare as an abandoned amusement park waits for another life.
