Portland may not have skyscrapers like you'll see in New York or Chicago, but it is home to some of the tallest buildings in Maine. Here's the list of the 10 tallest buildings in Portland.
This list compiled by Emprois.com, has the tallest buildings in Portland by number of floors. Some buildings stand taller, but the added height is space that is uninhabitable. We've included the full height of the buildings, but they rank in this list by floors. Buildings with the same number of floors are then ranked by actual height.
1. Franklin Towers - 16 Floors - 175 feet tall - Built 1969
This low-cost housing development sits at the top of Franklin Arterial and can't be missed when taking the major artery into the city.
2. Back Bay Tower - 15 Floors - Approx.186 feet tall - Built 1990
This 15 floor luxury apartment building on Cumberland Avenue has a landscaped garden rooftop terrace, fitness center, full size heated swimming pool, laundry facilities and dry cleaning on site. Just writing that made me feel broke.
3. Time and Temperature Building - 14 Floors - Approx. 173 feet tall - Built 1926
Built in 1926 and undoubtedly the most iconic building in Portland, the Time and Temperature Building has only had a time and temp sign on its roof since two additional floors were added in 1964.
4. One City Center - 13 Floors - Approx. 161 Feet Tall - Built 1987
When One City Center was built, it totally reconfigured the Monument Square area. The view of the square from the third floor is the best in Portland. We know, because we work there.
5. The Westin Portland Harborview - 13 Floors - 129 Feet Tall - Built 1928
There's a lot of history at the Eastland hotel on High Street near Congress Square. East has met west since Westin hotels purchased the Eastland and made major renovations to the building. They changed the name, but kept the iconic Eastland sign.
6. Promenade East Condominiums - 13 Floors - 110 Feet Tall - Built 1975
You can't afford this view over the Eastern Prom.
7. Portland House - 12 Floors - Approx. 149 feet - Built 1969
Originally built as public housing, Portland House on the Eastern Prom has an amazing view of Casco Bay that will run you almost $3000 a month fully furnished.
8. The Holiday Inn by the Bay - 11 Floors - Approx. 136 feet - Built in 1973
If there's a convention in town, it's probably happening at the The Holiday Inn by the Bay on Spring Street.
9. People's United Bank Building - 11 Floors - 135 feet - Built in 1909
Originally named the Fidelity Trust Company building, Portland's first high-rise at the corner of Congress and Preble has changed its name over the years to match whichever bank is the current tenant. When it was built in 1909, it was the tallest building north of Boston.
10. Deering Pavilion - 11 Floors - 101 feet - Built in 1973
The only building in the top 10 tallest in Portland that isn't in the heart of the downtown area is Deering Pavilion. This building on Forest Avenue provides housing for the elderly.
