Zayre store

Growing up in Saco, Zayre was the center of my small universe. It's where I got everything. Halloween costumes, pajamas, my Bobby Sherman lunch box that came with a Thermos, and yarn and poster board for school projects. I'm pretty sure that Zayre is where Santa got the Captain and Tennille album, "Love Will Keep Us Together" that he left for me in 1975. Also, I grew up calling it Zayre's. Plural. When I was in 8th grade I went to Zayre with my boyfriend and we had our picture taken together at a booth they had set up in the middle of the store. They made it look like we were in a dreamy brandy snifter with roses around it. It was mounted on a wood plaque under plexiglass. I still have it. Classic! The back of the store was the best because that's where all of the vending machines were! Right next to the cigarette machines. Remember those?

I found this gem to share with you.

I love old television commercials so I dug these up. Check out the clothes!

There was nothing more exciting than going to Zayre around Christmas time and getty dizzy from all the decorations and toys!

In 1989 Zayre became Ames. Sure, I could still get my Love's Baby Soft Lemon and my Strawberry Maybelline Kissing Potion, but it was the end of an era.

Do you have a memory of Zayre to share? Did you call it Zayre's, like I did? Do you have a Throw back Thursday suggestion? Comment on our Fan Page or tweet #throwbackzayre
