8/17/1968 (47 years ago today) - The Doors start a month-long residency at the No. 1 spot on the U.S. album chart with their third LP, the psychedelic classic "Waiting For The Sun". Hard to believe: it is the band's one and only No. 1 LP!!! The first side opens with "Hello, I Love You", their second No. 1 single, but look at what else is on here -- "Five To One", "The Unknown Soldier",  "Love Street", "Not To Touch The Earth". Absolutely one of their strongest most solid albums; The Doors are in to win it...

8/17/1969 (46 years ago today) - It's the third and final day for the Woodstock Festival at Max Yasgur's Farm, Bethel, New York. With over 186,000 tickets sold, the flimsy fences and ticket barriers were a joke -- they were gone before the end of the first day, which prompted the organizers to announce that it would now be a free event and (duh!) thousands more show up. Thanks to their riveting performances, Ten Years After and Joe Cocker become household names; for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, it is their very first gig as a band; the fest ends with Jimi playing "The Star Spangled Banner" at sunrise. You don't get more classic than this...

8/17/1974 (41 years ago today) - The comeback is a complete success: Eric Clapton starts a four-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with "461 Ocean Boulevard". In addition to (essentially) introducing reggae legend Bob Marley to most of us with "I Shot The Sheriff", the LP boasted some of Eric's finest work, especially the cover versions: "Willie And the Hand Jive", Elmore James' "I Can't Hold Out", Robert Johnson's "Steady Rollin' Man". No wonder the LP hit the top spot; there's not one wasted second, a really beautiful piece of work, start to finish.
