8/3/1971 (49 years ago today) - Hey, he just wanted to get out and play live, y'know?: Paul McCartney announced the formation of his new group Wings with wife Linda and ex-Moody Blues guitarist-singer Denny Laine -- Confused fans are weary and extremely s-l-o-w to respond to the project. When their debut album "Wild Life"  comes out, well, that doesn't help much at all and yet, there's something beguiling in listening to Paul not give a s---t about what anyone thinks...

8/3/1973 (47 years ago today) - This one absolutely raised the bar: Stevie Wonder released his 16th(!) studio LP "Innervisions" and minds are sufficiently blown -- It's a landmark recording of his "classic period", no doubt about it. Stevie plays virtually all of the instruments on six of the albums nine tracks and lyrically the themes mark a new level of sophistication, referencing drug abuse in "Too High", systematic racism in "Living For The City", a scorching take-down of then President Nixon on "He's Misstra Know It All", and, of course, "Higher Ground", easily one of the funkiest hit singles to ever grace Planet Earth. A must-have for your collection: believe us, you need this record...

8/3/1974 (46 years ago today) - ...and you thought Jimi Hendrix opening for The Monkees was weird: Anne Murray was the headliner at The Schaefer Festival in New York; the opening act was Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band -- Brewer & Shipley (one-hit wonders with "One Toke Over The Line", their lone pop at fame) came on after Bruce, then Ms. Murray wrapped up the night! You could say dues are just about to be paid off in full...
