12/1/1957 (58 years ago today) - Buddy Holly and the Crickets appear on "The Ed Sullivan Show" performing "That'll Be The Day" and "Peggy Sue". We're not done: Sam Cooke was also a guest on the same show doing "You Send Me". Now that's what you call your must-see TV...

12/1/1983 (32 years ago today) - Neil Young was sued by his new record label, Geffen, because the music he was releasing was "not commercial in nature and musically uncharacteristic of his previous albums". First there was "Trans" (1982), a kinda-sounds-more-like-Kraftwerk LP where most of Neil's vocals were put through various special effects; then this new release made under the name Neil Young and the Shocking Pinks, 1983's "Everybody's Rockin'", consisting of all rockabilly covers (and a few originals) that totaled just 25 minutes in length! It was his shortest album, and, apparently, also the last straw for the corporate honcho's who were pretty upset about funding Neil's experiments. It is to laugh...

12/1/1944 - Happy Birthday to Doors drummer John Densmore, 71 years old today. It is impossible to underestimate his percussive finesse and the way it helped shaped the sound of the band. John came into Portland a few years ago when we doing "Psychedelic Breakfast" on Saturday mornings, and he hung around for the whole show, telling stories and generally being cooler than any one else in Portand, Maine that day. A most-sharp hep-kat indeed. Nice guy.
