We call days like these "Props to those who served", so we're gettin' ya into the Holiday weekend with another all Happy Birthdays edition of the Calendar today, Ho-Ho-Ho, etc...

12/23/1939 - Born on this date, U.K. rocker Johnny Kidd, front man for '60's Brit live-legends Johnny Kidd & The Pirates. The Who notoriously covered their classic "Shakin' All Over" on "Live at Leeds". Kidd died in a car crash while on tour in England in October 1966; he was just 30 years old.

12/23/1940 - Happy Birthday to guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, 75 years old today. Before forming the critically acclaimed blues-folk-roots duo Hot Tuna, Jorma was an original/founding member of Jefferson Airplane. Without Jorma on guitar (especially the understated acoustic performances), the Airplane albums "Surrealistic Pillow", "After Bathing At Baxter's" and "Crown Of Creation" simply would not be the acknowledged classics they have become. Grace Slick and Marty Balin got the out-front attention, but it was Jorma's guitar prowess that earned the Airplane their due. Fact.

12/23/1941 - He was the bona-fide star of the 1968 psychedelic classic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", so we gotta say Happy Birthday to Iron Butterfly drummer Ron Bushy, 74 years old today.

12/23/1941 - Born on this date, under-rated folk singer-songwriter Tim Hardin; most notable for his compositions "Reason To Believe" (covered by Rod Stewart on his best album "Every Picture Tells A Story") and "If I Were A Carpenter", which was also recorded by the likes of Johnny Cash, Robert Plant, Willie Nelson, The Four Tops, Bobby Darin and Johnny Rivers. Tim was 39 years old when died from a heroin overdose on December 29th, 1980.
