1/3/1969 (51 years ago today) - The Jimi Hendrix Experience appear on The Lulu TV Show in Great Britain and are scheduled to perform two songs -- They do "Voodoo Child", then after just one verse and chorus of "Hey Joe", Jimi changes gears and they instead launch into a rippin' version of Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" (it's Jimi's unrehearsed tribute to the band who had split up up a few days earlier) -- The Experience pay no mind to anyone/anything else: they continue jamming, running over their allocated time slot on the live show, preventing host Lulu from properly closing the show. Excellent!

1/3/1974 (46 years ago today) - It's Zimmy's first live appearance in seven years: In Chicago, Bob Dylan and The Band begin a 40-date/21 city U.S. tour; when it wraps up in Inglewood, California at the end of February, the stats are stunning: more than 5 million applications for a total of 660,000 tickets sold! Top-dollar tickets were $9.50, an extravagant sum in 1974, actually. Dylan later claimed he hated every minute of this tour.

1/3/1945 - Happy Birthday Stephen Stills, 75 years old today -- Neil Young calls him "a musical genius"; Rolling Stone magazine has him at No. 47 on their 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time. Superb talent; rather grumpy in real life. We're okay with that.
