7/27/1958 (58 years ago today) - Researchers for the Esso gas company release their findings of a study on what effects the car radio has on you, and they came up with this warning: apparently, listening to rock and roll while driving actually costs you money! How? Well, it seems that the rhythms in rock music cause the driver to be foot heavy on the pedal, thus making you waste fuel! Don't you love real science?

7/27/1991 (25 years ago today) - There was no way to escape this one: Bryan Adams starts seven-weeks-in-a-row at No. 1 with the impossible-to-avoid-because-it's-everywhere ballad "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You". Like many big hits that came before it, the song really is a great piece of work -- masterful production, lush arrangement, killer lead vocal -- that, unfortunately, most of the public ended up resenting for no good reason other than the fact that it simply was played to death. The public just got warn out with this one; a cruel fate for a rather nifty piece.

7/27/1944 - Happy Birthday to singer-songwriter Roberta Lee Streeter a.k.a. Bobbie Gentry,72 years old today. She was one of the very first female country artists to both compose and produce her own material, rising to international fame with the totally fantastic Southern Gothic narrative "Ode To Billie Joe" -- The song spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billlboard Hot 100 chart back in 1967, selling over four million worldwide! The definition of sultry, Bobbie's catalog of albums are loaded with brooding atmospheres that highlight not just her rough-around-the-edges vocal style, but also her exceptional musicianship, especially her guitar playing. Look up 1970's Grammy award winning LP "Fancy", you will be mightily impressed.
