7/02/1979 (36 years ago today) - You can take your music with you, and it won't skip either!!! Sony introduces The Walkman, the first portable audio cassette player, and travelling with your tunes will never ever be the same again! Over the next 30 years, over 385 million (read that again) Walkmans will be sold; first in cassette, then onto CD, mini-disc and digital file versions. This is the standard until the arrival of Apple's iPod. Either way, mucho sentimental value here, kids...

7/02/1949 - Happy Birthday to "The Professor", the fantastically talented keyboardist Roy Bittan, 66 years old today, and a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band since 1975. Along the way, Roy's also recorded with David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Meat Loaf (and just about dominating the classic "Bat Out Of Hell" album), plus Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks, Bob Seger, Dire Straits -- reliable would be a rather lackluster description of his talents. If you haven't listened to "Backstreets" in awhile, right now would be a good time to do so...
