Today you got one of the 70's funkiest classic singles; a band's final concert (though they didn't know it); and the sad end for a Sixties psychedelic legend...

7/07/1973 (42 years ago today) - Billy Preston starts a two-week stint at Number One on the U.S. singles chart with the classic "Will It Go 'Round In Circles", the first of his two No. 1's ("Nothing From Nothing" would top the chart a year later). Interesting side-note: It was Billy Preston who originated the phrase "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with", which he used onstage for live performances; later, Stephen Stills asked for Billy's permission to use it for his next single; Billy said yes. True story!!!

7/07/1980 (35 years ago today) - Led Zeppelin play their last concert with John Bonham on drums; the band is wrapping up a European tour in West Berlin, finishing the show with a 17-minute version of "Whole Lotta Love".

7/07/2006 (9 years ago today) - Pink Floyd founding member/singer/songwriter/guitarist Syd Barrett passes away from complications arising from diabetes; he was 60 years old. The legendary psychedelic recluse actually was active as a rock musician for only about seven years, forming Pink Floyd in 1965, but quitting the band three years later after just one LP. Syd managed to release a pair of critically acclaimed/cult fave solo albums before going into self-imposed seclusion for more than thirty years. In the end, though, the same sad story -- another fantastic talent who quite literally lost his mind because of drug use.
