7/9/1962 (57 years ago today) - Before The British Invasion took hold, this was a real game-changer: Bob Dylan recorded "Blowin' In The Wind" on this date at Columbia Studios in New York City -- Bob had originally composed just a two-verse version of the song which he debuted at Gerde's Folk City back in April, but for this recording session he added a middle verse; by the end of the afternoon, the now legendary classic track was done. Hard to imagine 1960's American music without it...

7/9/1983 (36 years ago today) - It's not a love song: The Police start an eight-week run at No. 1 on the singles chart with "Every Breath You Take" -- It also went to the Top Spot in the U.K., Canada, Ireland, South Africa, and made The Top 3 in seven other countries -- It was the best-selling single of 1983, the fifth best-selling single of the decade(!), and has since been inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame's 500 Songs That Shaped Rock & Roll -- At the 1984 Grammy Awards, Sting picked up the songwriters' Song of the Year award, while The Police won for Best Pop Performance. Was there anyone else who could have made a song about stalking so darn catchy...

7/9/1988 (31 years ago today) - They didn't write it, and they're not fond of playing it live either: Cheap Trick finally get a No. 1 single with "The Flame"; written by British songwriters Bob Mitchell and ex-Atomic Rooster singer-bassist Nick Graham, the track was first offered to English singer Elkie Brooks who turned it down -- The president of their record company, Epic, knew it would be a chart-topper and was going to give it to Chicago, but offered it to Cheap Trick first, who badly needed a hit at this time. Even though main-man guitarist Rick Nielsen supposedly used his boot heel to smash the demo-cassette the band was given, they decided "Why not?" and the rest...etc., etc....
