The first Beatle drummer quits; the first No. 1 single that featured a sitar; and a classic rock drummer's birthday...

6/11/1960 (55 years ago today) - His name was Tommy Moore and today he decided to quit drumming for the band that would very quickly be known as The Beatles; seems he didn't think they were going anywhere so he returned to his job as forklift driver for Garston Bottle Works. Tommy was replaced, quite briefly, by Norman Chapman who only drummed for three Beatle performances before being called into National Service. After going without a drummer (and mostly without gigs as well) for a few weeks, it's Pete Best who lands the job on August 12th, one day before The Beatles leave for a run of club dates in Hamburg, Germany. Fate, as they say...

6/11/1966 (49 years ago today) - The Rolling Stones start two weeks at Number One on the U.S. singles chart with "Paint It, Black"; it's their third U.S. No. 1 (it also tops the U.K. chart) and is notable for being the very first No. 1 single to feature a sitar on the recording, thanks to original/founding member and multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones...

6/11/1949 - ...and he's the only member of the band without one: Happy Birthday to ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard [insert irony here] who turns 66 today...
