Tommy’s Coffee Break Calendar for June 19th
6/19/1965 – (49 years ago today) The Four Tops went to No. 1 with “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)”, a definitive Motown classic if there ever was one! Lead vocalist Levi Stubbs, though, was quite unhappy about the recording session, to the point where the powers-that-be had to promise him he could do it again the following day. Only they didn’t mean it: no other session ever took place, and the track that became the hit we all know and love turned out to be just the second take of the song!
6/19/1968 – (46 years ago today) “Jumping Jack Flash” becomes The Rolling Stones seventh No. 1 single in the U.K. Keith Richards claims he wrote the lyrics with Mick Jagger while hanging out at his country house, where they were woken up one morning by the gardener (guess his name) who was walking past the window. When Mick asked what the noise was, Keith dryly replied: “Oh, that’s Jack, that’s Jumping Jack!” Classic riffage inevitably followed.
6/19/1951 – Happy Birthday cheers to Heart vocalist Ann Wilson who turns 63 today. Next time an “American Idol” contestant warbles their way through a Heart classic, well, that’s when you fully realize what awesome chops Miss Nancy really has!
