6/29/1968 (47 years ago today) - It was barely a cult item here in America, but over in England it began a six-week-run at Number One and kept The Beatles and Stones at bay: definitely in The Top Five (or three!) of the best of the 1960's psychedelic LPs -- "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" by The Small Faces, and one of the (very) few that still sounds fresh today. You remember this one in the record racks, it had a round cover that was designed to look like a tobacco tin. And what a band they were: Steve Marriott, Kenney Jones, Ian McLagen, Ronnie Lane. They deserve as much attention/praise as Pink Floyd for the stuff they did during this time. Truly deserves the title "masterpiece", a very warm and unique musical experience that you must listen to at least once before you leave the planet; it's that special...

6/29/1975 (40 years ago today) - Singer/songwriter Tim Buckley dies from an overdose of heroin and morphine at age 28. Tim released nine albums between 1966 and 1974 and never really stood still stylistically; he was amongst the first of the era to invite his audience to experience music that was outside the usual singer/songwriter box; totally unafraid to venture into anything, be it jazz, funk, soul, psychedelia, avant-garde; pioneering the "voice as instrument" technique while his career went in fits and jerks and as he became cherished by a devoted audience and much admired by his peers, like so many before him, Tim's recordings became the stuff of legend...after he passed away. Look him up.

6/29/1984 (31 years ago today) - Yes, it's now been over thirty years: Bruce Springsteen begins the first leg of his "Born In The U.S.A." Tour with a three-night-run at the St. Paul Civic Center in Minnesota. With The E Street Band, the grand total of performances is 156 concerts before the tour wraps up in L.A. on October 2, 1985. The Boss indeed. Whew!!!
