3/3/1966 (50 years ago today) - Somewhat appropriately, they were named after a steamroller: In Los Angeles, Buffalo Springfield are formed: Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Richie Furay, Dewey Martin and Bruce Palmer are the original line-up that takes folk and country influences, mixes 'em up with British Invasion and psychedelic rock stylings and absolutely kill it with just a couple of classic albums before calling it quits a mere two years later! "For What It's Worth" remains a classic rock radio staple half-a-century later...

3/3/1969 (47 years ago today) - It must have been quite an afternoon: Led Zeppelin record their first appearance on London's BBC Radio 1 "Top Gear" program; also performing on the same show were The Moody Blues, Deep Purple and Free. Seriously! This is why archivists insist that 1969 was one of the all-time best years for real rock and roll. Hard to argue...

3/3/1973 (43 years ago today) - In England, they were the first band since The Beatles to do this: "Cum On Feel The Noize" by Slade hits the British singles chart in the No. 1 position in its first week out! Another band that was hot stuff in Europe for a few years in the early Seventies that never really caught on here in the States...
