5/17/1964 (52 years ago today) - Bob Dylan makes his first major British concert appearance -- it's a Sunday afternoon show at London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall, and Bob plays an 18 song set that included the live debut of "Mr. Tambourine Man". John Lennon requests an audience with Dylan after the show; it doesn't happen.

5/17/1969 (47 years ago today) - Joni Mitchell is on the cover of the latest issue of Rolling Stone. It will cost you 35 cents.

5/17/1942 - Happy Birthday to (yet) another vastly talented singer-songwriter who seems to be (too) easily taken for granted, one of The Rolling Stones favorite American artists, the legendaryTaj Mahal, 74 years old today. He was born Henry Saint Clair Fredericks in Harlem, New York and grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts where he taught himself to play guitar, banjo, piano, harmonica and many other instruments. Taj is perhaps best known for reshaping the definition of blues music over his 50 year career by fusing it with non-traditional forms, especially sounds from the Caribbean, Africa and the South Pacific, making him one of the first artists to turn his audiences onto the then-burgeoning world music scene. Any one of his 1970's LP's for Columbia will make you more than happy-happy, try one on...
