More chart proof that, yes, indeed, it is almost always about The Beatles and The Stones! Just the way it is, baby…

5/22/1965 – (49 years ago today) “Ticket To Ride” becomes The Beatles eighth U.S. #1! Collector’s Item note: the single’s label claimed the song was from the film “Eight Arms To Hold You”, which was the original title of The Fab Four’s second movie; the title wasn’t changed to “Help!” until after the 45 was released.

5/22/1971 – (43 years ago today) The Rolling Stones begin a four week run at Number One with their second U.S. LP chart-topper “Sticky Fingers”. The album is also the debut of their own record label and the now classic “Tongue and Lip Design”! On the orignal vinyl release, the artwork (designed by Andy Warhol) featured a working zipper that, when pulled down, revealed…white cotton briefs! The crotch shot did not belong to Mick Jagger; it was Warhol model/actor Joe Dallesandro. All these years later, it’s still one of the best rock records EVER MADE!

5/22/1976 – (38 years ago today) “Silly Love Songs” by Wings kicks off 5 weeks in a row at #1 on the U.S. chart; it’s Paul‘s fifth No. 1 since leaving The Beatles! And, because McCartney had been relentlessly teased at the time by critics and by John Lennon for writing “lightweight” songs, he intentionally composed this Wings track in response.
