5/26/1964 (52 years ago today) - Marianne Faithfull recorded "As Tears Go By"; written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the session featured future Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page on guitar and John Paul Jones on bass. File that under "Wicked Cool".

5/25/1972 (44 years ago today) - David Bowie doesn't want one of his favorite bands to call it quits, so he meets up with Mott The Hoople and offers them a couple of songs to, you know, just kinda help them out: they turn down "Suffragette City", but Ian Hunter just about goes insane when Bowie lets them have "All The Young Dudes". A career-saving move if there ever was one...

5/25/1926 - Born on this date, one of the most influential musicians in history, jazz trumpeter and composer Miles Davis. Together with his various band configurations, Miles was at the forefront of several major developments in jazz music -- bebop, cool jazz, third stream, modal jazz, post-bop and, especially in terms of how he effected the rock world, jazz fusion. Classic LP's like Jeff Beck's "Blow By Blow" and The Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Birds Of Fire" probably wouldn't exist if not for his pioneering work in this field. Miles Davis passed away from a combination of stroke and pneumonia on September 28, 1991, at the age of 65. His catalog is deep and unique; if you've never experienced "Kind Of Blue" (1959) or "Bitches Brew" (1970), you're missing out on some of the most astonishing music ever recorded. Seriously.
