5/07/1966 (49 years ago today) - The Mamas & The Papas start a three week run at Number One on the U.S. singles chart with "Monday Monday", a song that everybody in the group said they hated except for composer John Phillips; it goes on to win the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal By A Group.

5/07/1972 (43 years ago today) - The Rolling Stones release their second album on their own label, the double-vinyl masterpiece "Exile On Main Street". Strangely receiving mixed reviews at the time, it has since (rightfully) earned its reputation as one of the Best Records Of All-Time, which it is: every track's a gem -- "Tumbling Dice", "All Down The Line", "Rocks Off", "Rip This Joint", "Sweet Virginia", "Happy", "Let It Loose" --  definitely one of those records that could only have been made by The Stones. Not The Beatles, not The Who, not Dylan, etc...frankly, an astonishing achievement that will never sound out of date!

5/07/1977 (38 years ago today) - The Eagles hit Number One on the U.S. singles chart with the title track to (arguably) their best work ever: "Hotel California" is their fourth No. 1 single; the album goes to No. 1 in America, Norway, New Zealand, Canada and Australia, selling over 32 million worldwide (16 million in the U.S. alone!) . Interesting side-note: while the band was making the album at Miami's Criteria Studios, they were forced to stop recording on numerous occasions because Black Sabbath was in an adjacent studio doing sessions for their "Technical Ecstasy" LP -- apparently Sabbath were too loud and the sound was bleeding through the studio walls!
