A demo that's destined to become an all-time classic! -- What's Reggie's best selling album...ever? -- A birthday for an under-appreciated vocalist...

11/10/1955 (60 years ago today) - You could say it all began here, when Elvis Presley attends the Country Music Disc Jockey Convention in Nashville. While resting up at his hotel, an aspiring songwriter named Mae Boren Axton plays him a working version of a song she's written with Tommy Durden -- Elvis and his soon-to-be-new-record-label like the song so much they decide to make it his very first single on RCA Victor. When released a couple of months from now, in January 1956, "Heartbreak Hotel" becomes Elvis' first Number One pop record!

11/10/1973 (42 years ago today) - It's his third U.S. No. 1 album, and it becomes his biggest success: Elton John starts an eight week run at the top of the chart here in America with the totally fantastic double-set "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". It was probably a good idea to change the name of the release, too -- originally titled "Vodka And Tonics And Silent Movies, Talking Pictures", this 2-LP masterwork went on to sell over 18 million copies worldwide. Boasting three Top Ten singles (the title track, "Bennie And the Jets", and "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting"), tributes to Marilyn Monroe, Roy Rogers and Jamaica, along with the epic 11-minute opening opus "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", this was arguably the pinnacle of all of his studio work. Many hits followed, but no other Elton release had the "wow!" factor like this one. In other words, essential.

11/10/1948 - Born on this date, the "L" in E.L.P. -- Happy Birthday Greg Lake, 67 years old today. Started out as lead vocalist/bassist for the frighteningly excellent original line-up of King Crimson, Greg's musicianship and vocals were somewhat taken-for-granted amidst the bombast of band mates keyboardist Keith Emerson and drummer Carl Palmer. Today though, if you go back and listen those first three ELP albums, it's the voice that stands out -- unlike some of the trio's pretentious art-rock arrangements, Greg's singing is what really gives those recordings cred; we say his chops are vastly under-appreciated...
