10/16/1965 (50 years ago today) - They cannot be stopped, that's all there is to it: At Abbey Road studios in London, The Beatles nail "Day Tripper" in just three takes! Some vocals and a few overdubs are added and...whacko!!! -- one of their most legendary singles is done before the end of the day. Who works like this anymore?

10/16/1976 (39 years ago today) - It's a record no one else could have possibly made: The double-LP set "Songs In The Key Of Life" becomes Stevie Wonder's third No. 1 album on the U.S. chart. Just about perfect, too: "Sir Duke", "Isn't She Lovely", "I Wish", "As", "Another Star", "Love's In Need Of Love Today". A very ambitious-sounding double-vinyl set that was originally released with a bonus four-song EP checks in at the No. 57 spot on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums Of All-Time; it was Stevie's 18th studio recording and, without a doubt, the culmination of his "classic albums" period.

10/16/2006 (9 years ago today) - CBGB, the infamous New York City "punk" club and bona-fide piece of American rock history, closed after one final performance from Patti Smith who was discovered at CBGB's back in the early Seventies, along with a gang of other soon-to-be-influential bands like Talking Heads, Blondie and especially The Ramones. The venue had first opened in December, 1973; its full name was CBGBOMFUG -- "Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers" -- a "gormandizer" being a "ravenous eater of foods" or a "voracious eater of music". So now you know...
