10/19/1966 (50 years ago today) - ...and they only played two shows!: The Yardbirds arrive in New York City for their first U.S. tour with both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page sharing lead guitar duties! Can you imagine...? After only a couple of dates in, Beck developed tonsillitis and quit the group. Things worked out rather well for both guitarists from here on out...

10/19/1973 (43 years ago today) - Largely misunderstood when released on this date, David Bowie's seventh studio LP, "Pin -Ups", contained no original material, a let-down to some of his most faithful fans. But this collection of cover versions of some of David's favorite songs and artists has aged extremely well -- including tracks originally done by Pink Floyd, The Pretty Things, The Who, The Animals and The Kinks -- and, as usual, Bowie was ahead-of-the-curve: making sure the world would hear the roots of British Invasion artists, done up in full-throttle Ziggy style. Mick Ronson's lead guitar work on this record is flat-out astonishing, as good as anything else he ever recorded with Bowie. If you haven't heard this record in awhile, it's definitely worth going back to. Meant to be played loud, of course.

10/19/1944 - Born on this date, reggae master artist/multi-instrumentalist/singer-songwriter Peter Tosh; an original member of Bob Marley's Wailers, Peter decided to go solo in 1974. Highly regarded by his peers, Peter was the Rastafarian real deal, from humble beginnings singing on the street corners of Trenchtown, Jamaica, to performing with Mick Jagger as his guest on "Saturday Night Live"; the LP's "Legalize It" (1976) and "Bush Doctor" (1978) are considered genius works in the way he mixed reggae with ska, rocksteady and R&B styles. Tragically, Peter was murdered by burglars that broke into his home on September 11th, 1987.
