10/26/1968 (48 years ago today) - The two day San Francisco Pop Festival gets underway at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. As definitive a '60's line-up as you could imagine: on Saturday, you got Johnny Rivers, Jose Feliciano, Eric Burdon & The Animals, Iron Butterfly and The Buddy Miles Express; on Sunday, it was The Chambers Brothers, Canned Heat, The Grass Roots, Procol Harum, Deep Purple and Creedence Clearwater Revival. By the way, a first-edition printing of the poster advertising this weekend sells on-line for $1,286!!!

10/26/1984 (32 years ago today) - 19-year-old John D. McCollum killed himself with a .22 caliber handgun after (supposedly) spending the day listening to nothing but Ozzy Osbourne records. One year later, his parents took the Oz and CBS Records to court, claiming the track "Suicide Solution" was the root cause of their son's death. The case was eventually thrown out of court.

10/26/1951 - Happy Birthday to one of the all-time great funky bassists ever, Bootsy Collins, 66 years old today. William Earl's resume tells you all you need to know: that's Bootsy on bass for James Brown in the early 1970's, then Parliament-Funkadelic and leader of his own group, Bootsy's Rubber Band. How funky? Test-drive JB's "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine". Pretty bad-ass.
