9/15/1961 (54 years ago today) - Ya gotta start somewhere...: A young band from Hawthorne, California, that call themselves The Pendletones are about to embark on their very-first-this-time-it's-for-real recording session at Hite Morgan's studio in Los Angeles. The song they record is titled "Surfin'", and in no time at all, it becomes the foundation that would shape their career -- a few weeks later they decide to re-name themselves The Beach Boys and they're off!!!

9/15/1979 (36 years ago today) - Led Zeppelin score their sixth U.S. No. 1 album when "In Through The Out Door" starts a seven-week run at the top of the charts. Recorded in only three weeks at ABBA's studio in Sweden, it would also end up being their final album of all new/original material. One year later, September 25, 1980, drummer John Bonham dies after a drinking binge; he was only 32 years old. The remaining members of the band wisely choose to bring the legend of Led Zeppelin to a close.

9/15/2004 (11 years ago today) - His real name was John Cummings: The Ramones founding member (some say he was the bands de facto leader), guitarist Johnny Ramone passes away at home following a five-year battle with prostate cancer. Saying The Ramones were a major influence on (almost every) punk band is like saying Lennon and McCartney wrote a couple of good tunes -- genuine trailblazers without a doubt. The first three Ramones albums are must-haves and if they're not in your collection, then we probably really don't want to have anything to do with you. Simple.
