9/18/1960 (55 years ago today) - On his twenty-first birthday, Frankie Avalon was given a check for the money he earned as a minor from such hits as his 1959 U.S. No. 1 single "Venus". The check was in the amount of...$600,000!!! In 1960 dollars, we're thinking "Yowza!!!"

9/18/1971 (44 years ago today) - ...plus it's only one of the best rock albums ever made: The Who's sixth studio release, "Who's Next", goes to No. 1 on the British album chart -- Strange but true: it is the band's only No. 1 LP in their homeland! According to photographer Ethan Russell, the legendary cover of the album (which shows the band having apparently just completed urinating on a large concrete piling) was a somewhat-tampered-with photo: in fact, since most of the band were unable to pee-on-demand, rainwater from an empty film canister was used to achieve the desired effect.

9/18/1983 (32 years ago today) - My eyes! My eyes!! MY EYES!!! During an interview on MTV to promote the release of their newest album "Lick It Up", all the members of Kiss appear without their make-up on for the first time.  Discuss...
