Jim Morrison does what he does, which is whatever you tell him not to do...Queen get a bill to replace bicycle seats...A genuine American musical icon born this date...OK, a rather obtuse mix on the calendar today, which is exactly how we like it.

9/17/1967 (48 years ago today) - The Doors are banned from further appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" after Jim "broke his agreement" with the show's producers. Seems they wanted The Doors front man to sing something other than "Girl we couldn't get much higher" when they perform "Light My Fire". Everybody thinks it's going to be fine, right? Well, the CBS suits explode into flames when Jim sings the "higher" line anyway. Ed Sullivan in particular goes ballistic. A fun evening all around.

9/17/1978 (37 years ago today) - Filming for Queen's latest video takes place at Wimbledon Stadium in England -- their new single "Bicycle Race" is a perfect piece of Freddie Mercury theatre. The video features 65 naked female professional models racing around the stadium's track on bicycles that had been hired for the day! Of course. The rental company wants Queen to pick up the tab for replacing all the bicycle saddles when they found out how they had been used.

9/17/1923 - Born this day, Hiram King Williams, Sr., who would go on to become one of the biggest and (arguably) most influential U.S. country stars ever, Hank Williams -- 36 Top 10 Country hits (eleven of which go to No. 1) -- and what a catalog: "Your Cheating Heart", "Hey Good Lookin'", "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", "Lovesick Blues", "Jambalaya", "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It" and so many more that have since been covered by artists of all genres of music. Pretty nifty!  Hank is also one of the very few artists to be in The Big Three: The Country Music Hall Of Fame, The Songwriters Hall Of Fame, and The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame! Years of back pain, alcoholism and drug abuse led to his death in the backseat of a Cadillac on January 1st, 1953 on the way to a gig; he was only 29 years old.
