Tonight’s WBLM Mini-Concert [VIDEO]

Today we honor a woman with a voice that impacted the history of rock like no other. Her achingly beautiful wail inspired everyone from Steven Tyler to Stevie Nicks. Janis Joplin was born on January 19, 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas. She made her way to San Francisco in the mid-sixties joining Big Brother and the Holding Company and later formed her own outfits, the Kozmic Blues Band and the Full-Tilt Boogie Band.

After her breakthrough performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 (watch below), she was on her way to being the first female superstar of rock music. Her death from an accidental heroin overdose was just a couple of weeks after the passing of Jimi Hendrix in October of 1970. Janis' rendition of Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Booby McGee" and the album it came from, Pearl went to number in the US the following year.
