I had dinner with a dear friend at Yosaku last night. Her name is Karen Durkot. Karen and I have known each other since I started at WBLM in 1987. Early in 1990, she was working for Def American Records. They had just signed a new band from Atlanta called the Black Crowes. This band had that classic blues-based sound reminiscent of Faces and Humble Pie. Their first single Jealous Again was an immediate favorite with Blimpsters. The positive reaction from the WBLM audience was rewarded with 3 appearances in Portland in 1990, with two shows at T-Birds and a summer show opening for Aerosmith at the Ballpark in OOB.

The relationship between Portland Maine and Black Crowes continued to grow, with them selling out the Civic Center on the Southern Harmony tour in 1993. That was an unforgettable night that we will always cherish with the band at the height of their powers!

They were also kind enough to celebrate our 25th and 40th anniversaries of WBLM at the State Theatre. So many great memories for the Blimp and the Crowes and we are sad to hear the news that it's all over.

Karen received a phone call from drummer, Steve Gorman during our dinner last night confirming that the news was true. She kindly handed the phone to me so that Steve and I could chat. I thanked him on behalf of Blimpville for all the great music over the years and he expressed his gratitude for the love and support of the Black Crowes from all the fans in Maine. It was full circle for Karen and I last night, we were together in beginning and the end saying goodbye to a truly great American band.

Watch Hard to Handle/Hush from the State Theatre...one of the last ever shows in Portland.
